Code of Ethics

Preamble

This code of ethics for Siġġiewi Rowing Club is based on a philosophy that involves emphasising the values of respect for individuals, commitment to excellence, teamwork, and social responsibility. Its focus is on “cura personalis” (care for the whole person), striving for “magis” (the greater good), and living with integrity.

Based on this philosophy, as members of Siġġiewi Rowing Club, we commit to upholding these core values that reflect a tradition of excellence, inclusion, integrity, and service to others.

Our actions, both on and off the water, should always demonstrate the values of respect, teamwork, and personal growth.

The Code

The twelve key principles of our Code of Ethics are:

1. Respect for All

We recognize the inherent dignity of every individual, regardless of background, age, physical ability, race, gender, or skill level. As a Club, we foster an inclusive environment where all members are equally valued. Our actions should reflect respect for teammates, competitors, coaches, and the broader community.

  • Be Kind and Considerate: Treat others with kindness, empathy, and respect.
  • Foster Inclusivity: Welcome and support diversity within the club, promoting equality and mutual respect.
  • Promote Dialogue and Listening: Engage in open and constructive communication, seeking to understand others’ perspectives.

Respect for others means that we:

  • Treat all members, coaches, officials, and competitors with dignity, fairness, and respect.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, support, and empathy towards fellow rowers, Club administrators and their delegates.
  • Respect the opinions and perspectives of others, encouraging open and constructive communication.
  • Avoid any form of harassment, bullying, or discrimination based on physical attributes, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or other personal attributes.

As a club we believe in providing an environment that is free from bullying, harassment and victimisation, and that recognises the dignity of all individuals who participate in rowing. The club will NEVER tolerate bullying and harassment. When it occurs, it is essential that everyone feels safe in reporting it so that it can be addressed.

2. Pursuit of Excellence (Magis)

We strive to do more, to be more, and to give more in everything we do. We seek to improve continuously, both as an individual and as a crew, and pursue excellence in both athletic performance and personal growth, aligning our actions with the greater good.

  • Commit to Hard Work: Dedicate ourselves to developing our skills, both as individuals and as a team.
  • Commit to continuous self-improvement, both as an athlete and an individual: Always strive to push our limits, while remaining humble in our successes.
  • Focus on Learning: View setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning, not failures. Maintain a positive attitude toward learning, feedback, and growth in the sport.
  • Support teammates in their personal and athletic development.

3. Integrity, Honesty and Accountability

We act with honesty, fairness, and transparency in ALL our dealings, ALWAYS. Each member is accountable for their actions and choices, upholding the values of trust and integrity both in competition and in practice.

  • Be Honest and Transparent: Uphold a high standard of personal and athletic integrity.
  • Take Responsibility: Own our actions, both the successes and the mistakes, and seek to learn from them.
  • Build Trust: Maintain trust with teammates, coaches, and competitors by acting ethically in all situations.
  • Act with integrity in all interactions, ensuring fair play and ethical behavior.
  • Be truthful and transparent when dealing with teammates, coaches, and management.
  • Honor commitments and responsibilities to the club, teammates, and rowing community.

4. Teamwork and Collaboration

We recognize that rowing is a team sport, and we commit to working collaboratively with all members to achieve success. The strength of the team lies in the unity, commitment, and mutual support of each individual.

  • Support Each Other: Encourage teammates and share in both the challenges and triumphs of the sport.
  • Promote Cooperation: Collaborate and communicate effectively, both in practice and in competition.
  • Celebrate Success Together: Value the collective achievements of the team over individual glory.

5. Care for the Whole Person (Cura Personalis)

We embrace the principle of care for the whole person. We prioritize not only physical training but also the emotional, mental, and all aspects of well-being of our members.

  • Support Personal Growth: Encourage and support each other’s development beyond rowing, whether academically, socially, or personally.
  • Maintain Balance: Strive for balance in our lives, recognizing the importance of rest, recreation, and reflection.
  • Foster Mental Resilience: Support each other through challenges and adversity, building resilience in both body and mind.

6. Commitment to Safety

  • Prioritize safety at all times, following all established safety protocols and guidelines during training and competitions.
  • Use equipment appropriately and ensure that it is properly maintained.
  • Be vigilant and act responsibly in ensuring the safety of yourself and others on the water.

7. Sportsmanship and Integrity at all times

  • Strive for a safe, fair and healthy sporting environment at all times.
  • Compete with honour and respect for the sport, both in victory and defeat.
  • Display good sportsmanship by congratulating and encouraging others, regardless of the outcome.
  • Follow the rules of rowing and respect the decisions of officials and referees.
  • Act to safeguard the integrity and values that make sport and physical recreation an enjoyable and sustainable part of our lifestyle.
  • Be guided by principles of fairness, honesty, and respect in sports.
  • Strive to create a sporting environment where we can can compete on a level playing field, free from doping, manipulation and unethical practices.
  • Embrace integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct at all times.

8. Respect for the Environment

  • Respect the waters like your home. Keep them clean.
  • Care for the rowing facilities, equipment, and any shared spaces, ensuring they are left in good condition for others.
  • Minimize waste, be mindful of environmental sustainability, and respect nature when training or competing outdoors.

9. Service to the Community

Our commitment to excellence and integrity extends beyond the rowing club. We believe that our success as a club is intertwined with our responsibility to be of service others and contribute positively to the community.

  • Give Back: Participate in community service and outreach activities that benefit others.
  • Act with Compassion: Recognize the needs of others and act with a spirit of generosity and compassion.

  • Address any conflicts or issues in a respectful and constructive manner, seeking resolution through appropriate channels.

12. Respect and Promote the Club’s Reputation

  • Represent the club with pride and integrity, both on and off the water.
  • Avoid any actions that could negatively impact the reputation of the club, its members, or the sport of rowing.
  • Act as a positive ambassador for rowing and the club within the community.
  • Respect the privacy and confidentiality of other members, coaches, and staff.
  • Do not share personal or sensitive information without permission, unless required by law or to ensure safety.
